Complex Anterior Segment Surgery

This type of surgery isĀ sometimes needed for the unfortunate few who have vision problems related to trauma, previous surgery, or congenital abnormalities. In some patients, the iris may have irregular shapes.

The iris is an important structure which determines the amount of light entering the light. An overly-large pupil will allow too much light into the eye, and cause glare. The images will not be in focus. An overly-small pupil will allow too little light into the eye, and images will be dark.

Eagle Eye Centre Techniques:

We offer specialized techniques to correct these pupil abnormalities with special sutures, and suturing techniques. In addition, we have a wide range of implants which can improve visual outcomes of such conditions. In the pictures below, you can see various iris abnormalities due to previous trauma, that are corrected with surgery. Though these surgeries can take a longer time, it is usually well worth the effort, as the visual outcomes are well-appreciated by patients.

The lens of the eye can also be malpositioned due to a variety of causes, ranging from trauma to previous surgery. We offer a range of specialized lens-replacement surgeries to improve visual outcomes in cases where lens support in the eye is inadequate. We often deal with complicated lens surgeries that most general eye surgeons have difficulty with.

Iris Pupilloplasty:

This picture shows that the iris spincter has been ruptured by trauma. The lens is also cloudy. This patient experiences poor vision because his iris cannot get any smaller, even in the face of bright light. It's like having an open camera aperture all the time. Vision is understandably poor in both dark and bright environments.

This picture was taken soon after the same patient had an hour-long surgery to repair the iris, and remove the cataract. The iris is repaired, and the pupil (which is the opening formed by the iris for light to enter the eye) is smaller. The patient now experiences less glare, and the images are much sharper.

Iridodialysis:

Another unfortunate industrial injury left this patient with severe iris trauma, with defects in multiple areas of his iris. His lens also started turning cloudy, and started to wobble every time his eye moved.

After a lengthy surgery to repair his iris defects, and remove his opaque lens and stabilize his lens, his iris appears rounder and more regular in shape.
