Dr Chong is a Senior Consultant Eye Surgeon with special interests in Cataract and Refractive surgery as well as Comprehensive Ophthalmology including the management of general conditions such as dry eyes, glaucoma, diabetic eye disease, floaters, retinal tears, refractive errors (myopia, presbyopia, astigmatism) and paediatric myopia control.
He graduated from the Faculty of Medicine at the National University of Singapore in 2008, and subsequently trained under the ACGME-I accredited SingHealth Ophthalmology Residency Program.
During his training, Dr Chong obtained the Master of Medicine in Ophthalmology, whilst receiving multiple awards, including the SingHealth Outstanding Resident in Ophthalmology award thrice in 2013, 2014 and 2017 respectively. He was also awarded the Gold Medal in Paediatric Ophthalmology in the Joint Committee in Specialist Training (Singapore) Exit Examination, and elected as a Fellow of the Academy of Medicine of Singapore, Chapter of Ophthalmologists in 2017.
Dr Chong further trained in Cataract and Comprehensive Ophthalmology under the SNEC Advanced Clinical Subspeciality Programme, and completed Advanced Cataract, Intraocular Lens and Small Incision Cataract Surgery (SICS) training in India.
He has numerous publications in peer-reviewed journals to his credit, and has co-authored international Ophthalmology reference texts. His research work has also been presented and awarded at both local and international scientific conferences.
Aside from clinical work, Dr Chong is also passionate in education and training of undergraduates, residents and allied health professionals. His past appointments include Clinical Director of the Primary Eyecare Department, Programme Director of the Advanced Diploma for Optometrists, Clinical Associate Professor of Duke-NUS EYE Academic Clinical Programme and Clinical Lecturer in the NUS Clinical Faculty Scheme. As a Cataract Surgery trainer, he was conferred the Outstanding Faculty Award in 2021, and recognised for his education efforts with the Junior Doctor teaching award in 2016.
Despite the demands of the profession, Dr Chong believes in a balanced lifestyle and enjoys travelling, the outdoors, exercise and sports.
